If you really want to know what Scripture says about deacons, you go to Acts chapter 6.
In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.” This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.
ACTS 6:1-7
In studying this passage, five significant things spring from the Word of God about deacons.
Deacons are Pastor Supporters. In the passage, the deacons serve in a way that allows for pastors to focus on the spiritual needs of the body and fulfill their calling with the results that God is glorified.
Deacons are Problem Solvers. In the passage, there was a conflict in the body and God raised up seven deacons to help solve the problem and bless the fellowship. Deacons solve problems.
Deacons are People Servers. In the passage, the most important truth is revealed that position is not important, but people are very important to God. God loves people. Deacons must be humble, and servant oriented to love God and love people by sacrificial acts of service.
Deacons Promote Unity. The above passage shows that unity is very important in the body. The evil one will do anything to cause division and strife so that God’s people will not show love and share the Gospel with the world. Too many churches are caught up in conflict. Deacons are challenged to preserve the unity so that God’s work can be accomplished.
Deacons Preach to the Community. In the verses following this passage, the deacons went out and shared Jesus with others. While this is the call to all believers, Pastors and deacons must set the example of sharing Jesus with their family, neighbors, and community.
Deacons work alongside the staff to accomplish the ministry for Jesus. Their work as servant leaders is an example to the body and a blessing to the Pastors. Deacons love serving people and helping others to grow in the LORD.
